眼镜蛇颈部背面有白色眼镜架状斑纹，故而得名。眼镜蛇是夜行动物，这意味着它们白天睡觉并在夜间捕食。它们生活在半干旱的沙漠地区，这些沙漠中还是有一些水和植被存在的。眼镜蛇体长可达2米，被激怒时，会将身体前段竖起，颈部两侧膨胀，同时发出“呼呼”声，借以恐吓敌人。
